Subject Information File relates to Gearóid McAuliffe's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers during the week of 23 to 29 April 1916, his subsequent internment until [October] the same year and his service from 1916 to 1923 through the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War with the Irish Volunteers and IRA. It is stated on file that the subject was attached to the Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers and joined the Kimmage Garrison before the 1916 Rising. Gearoid McAuliffe served as Officer Commanding West Limerick Brigade IRA from the death of his predecessor Sean Finn on 30 March 1921 to the end of the Civil War in 1923. Exact details of his rank/position within the Irish Volunteers and IRA previous to this, and the corresponding dates involved, are unclear and there is no corroborating evidence on file. However he claims to have been acting as Officer Commanding 1 Battalion, West Limerick Brigade as well as Adjutant West Limerick Brigade from 1918 and to have been imprisoned in Belfast from May to October 1918. During the War of Independence in 1920 and 1921 McAuliffe claims to have participated in a number of attacks on British forces including Kilmallock Barracks, Ward's Hotel, Rathkeale, Abbeyfeale, Barrigoane and Ballyhahill. During the Civil War McAuliffe claims to have participated in fighting against National Army forces in Limerick, Adare, Rathkeale, Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale. File includes: typed copy (damaged) of sworn evidence given by Gearoid McAuliffe before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 on 24 April 1935; reference to McAuliffe's employment with the Limerick County Board of Health as Water and Sewerage Inspector and Water Rent Collector in the 1930s; original signed handwritten and typed and copy typed correspondence (23 July - 3 October 1946) involving Gearoid McAuliffe, the Secretary, Military Service Pensions Board, [Eamon Ó Córáin] Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach and Oscar Traynor TD, Minister fro Defence regarding McAuliffe's request for a replacement Certificate of Military Service following the loss of the original in a fire - writing on 26 September 1946 to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach, Oscar Traynor states that even in exceptional circumstances duplicate certificates are usually not issued but that in view of the Parliamentary Secretary's representations it will be issued in this case; material relating to the issuing of a 1916 Medal and Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar to Gearoid McAuliffe; material relating to subject's widow and to her next of kin/executors following her death - partly closed.
