File relates to Joseph Sweeney's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers during the week of 23 to 30 April 1916, his subsequent internment until July of that year, his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1916 and through the War of Independence and Truce period to 1922 and with the National Army from 1922 through the Civil War to 30 September 1923.
Joseph Sweeney served as a Battalion, Brigade and Divisional Officer Commanding with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1917 to 1922. Sweeney was also arrested and imprisoned from May to July 1920. He joined the National Army in [February] 1922 serving at the rank of Major General as Officer Commanding 1 Northern Division. At the time of his service pension application in 1924 Joseph Sweeney was serving in the Defence Forces as General Officer Commanding Curragh Camp and later served as Chief of Staff from June 1929 to October 1931.
