Subject Information File relates to Pierce Ryan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Ryan successfully appealed the initial decision of the Board (Military Services Pensions Act, 1934) and received an increased pension for the period 12 July 1921 - 31 March 1923. He claimed unsuccessfully for service in the period 1 April 1918 to 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence Pierce Ryan states that he was involved in raiding for arms, blocking roads and attacking Borrisokane RIC Barracks, County Tipperary (no dates given). He also claims to have been involved in the kidnapping of two 'Tans' (RIC) at Lisboney, County Tipperary on 7 May [1921], which led to the shooting of the RIC men. Ryan states he returned to Nenagh the night of this incident and that 'Black and Tan[s]' (RIC) came looking for him. He also says that he became a member of an Active Service Unit in May 1921. In the Truce period Ryan states that he was made Vice Commandant, training the 1 [Tipperary] Battalion Signallers. He also says that he was involved in the defense of Nenagh Barracks, County Tipperary on 29 June 1922. Ryan continued in service in the IRA in the Civil War period when, he states, he was O/C of the Battalion Signalling Corps [1 Tipperary Battalion]. He also claims to have single-handedly attacked ('bombed') Nenagh Barracks (no date given) and been responsible for a large capture of arms (no date given). Ryan says he was arrested several times (dates not given) and was arrested and imprisoned (location not given) at the end of March 1923. File contains material relating to Pierce Ryan's successful application for a Military Services Pension including: material relating to his successful appeal against initial pension decision; typed transcript of sworn statement given by Pierce Ryan to Advisory Committee (Military Service Pensions Act, 1934) on 16 May 1935; typed transcript of brief statement given by Patrick O'Donnell, Carrigatoher, Nenagh, County Tipperary to the same committee on 25 May 1935; typed and handwritten references from Frank McGiabh [McGrath] (5 May 1935), Seán Gaynor (9 May 1935 and 16 July 1935) and Martin Nolan (12 July 1935); two handwritten letters by Ryan outlining details of his service (5 September 1935 and 9 October 1935). Also material relating to the closure of Pierce Ryan's pension account and funeral grant, partially closed for reasons of Data Protection.
