Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. Larkin was awarded 5.5 years service for pension purposes in 1925 at Grade B under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924.
Attached to B Company, 3 Battalion, 2 Tipperary Brigade, IRA under the command of P. Kinane, it is stated that the applicant took part in IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: arms-raids; shooting RIC Constable Heanue at the Ragg village, Thurles, County Tipperary and going on the run to England for a year as a second policeman identified him [March 1920]; joining the ‘Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit) attached to 3 Battalion, 2 Tipperary Brigade; attacks on Crown Forces at Ballyboy; Upperchuch; Ross and Borrisoleigh and attacks on Borrisoleigh Barracks and Kilcommon Barracks.
During the Truce period, James Larkin served as a Battalion Police Officer.

Taking the pro-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 193), the subject served as Battalion Adjutant attached to the 12 Infantry Battalion, 4 Brigade at Templemore, County Tipperary. He resigned on 30 September 1924 or in October 1924 at the rank of Captain.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by James Larkin in support of his application; handwritten and typed statements regarding claimant’s service activities from J. Dunne; James Burke; M. Leamy and undated unsigned handwritten notes [of evidence given by James Larkin before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924] and material relating to the settlement and closure of claimant's service pension following his death on 25 April 1972.
File also contains material relating to James Larkin’s successful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts including: completed application form; doctor’s notes; medical report; and signed handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1954-69). Representations were made by Dan Morrissey TD (1954) and Michael Smith TD (1969).
