Subject Information File relates to Patrick Ryan’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. Patrick Ryan states that he joined the Donaskeigh Company, Clanwilliam Battalion, Irish Volunteers in County Tipperary in April 1917 under the command of Pat Deere. During the 1917-1919 period, he claims that he took part in the manufacture of munitions; scout work; intelligence work and procuring arms. The subject states that he received hospital treatment in September/October 1918 after accidently shooting himself in the palm of his hand during revolver practise. Attached to D Company, 4 Battalion, South Tipperary Brigade, IRA under the command of Pat Deere and Sean Duffy (2RB979), it is stated that the applicant took part in IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: arms-raids; outpost duty during Hollyford Barracks (July 1920) ; ambush of Crown Forces at Oola; ambush of lorry at Thomastown; joining the ‘Flying Column’ of Denis Lacy (DP23650) (September 1920 – March 1921); engagement at Arhelow; destruction of bridges and was promoted to Company Captain of D Company (April 1921 - October 1921). During the Truce period, Patrick Ryan claims that he was promoted to Battalion Commandant, 2 Battalion, 3 Tipperary Brigade (October 1921 – April 1922) and Battalion Commandant, 4 Battalion, 3 Tipperary Brigade (April 1922 - October 1922). Further states that he supervised IRA training camps underthe command of Seamus Robinson (MSP34REF147) and Denis Lacey (DP23650). Taking the anti-Treaty side of the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), the applicant states that he took part in engagements against the National Army at Tipperary Town [County Tipperary]; Kilfeacle [County Tipperary]; Thomastown, County Kilkenny; Grantstown [County Tipperary]; Lisgibbon [County Tipperary] and Donohill [County Tipperary]. Patrick Ryan claims that he was captured by National Army troops in October 1922 and interned in Limerick and Hare Park [The Curragh, County Kildare] until release in December 1923. Material on file shows that Patrick Ryan married Nellie Ryan (nee Connery) on 1 March 1927. File includes a signed handwritten statement regarding subject's service from Thomas Lynch (1955). File contains a sworn summary made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 11 June 1935. Representations were made on behalf of the Patrick Ryan’s widow Nellie Ryan by Dan Breen TD (1966) and Jackie Fahey TD (1971).
