Subject Information File relates to Sean Thorpe’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1921 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 23 April 1916 and 31 March 1921. Sean Thorpe (also known as John Thorpe or Jack Thorpe) states that he joined Na Fianna Éireann in Dublin 1912. From 1915 until 1918, references on file claim that he was attached to F Sluagh, Dublin Brigade under the command of Edward Daly, Garry Holohan (MSP34REF1385), Liam Staines (DP5788) and Liam Langley (MSP34REF21082). Reference Michael O’Carroll (MSP34REF8790) states that the Sean Thorpe helped him in [Colmcille Hall], 5 Blackhall Street in the week leading up to the Easter Rising. During Easter Week 1916, Sean Thorpe claims that he reported to Liam Staines (DP5788) the British Army troop movements in Marlboro Barracks and Royal Barracks with Christopher Clarke who had an access “pass”; procured 200 rounds of ammunition from the guard room at one of the Barracks with Jim Staines (James Staines) (24SP11475) and Lieutenant V. Staines (24SP12731?) and carried dispatches Church Street outpost to North Dublin Union garrison. Following the Rising, it is stated that the applicant was promoted to Company Captain, B Company, 2 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Na Fianna Éireann before being transferred to H Company, 1 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, Irish Volunteers in 1918 under the command of Seamus Kavanagh (24SP2561). Attached to H Company, 1 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in general IRA activity in Dublin during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: armed patrols and holding up of Buckingham Street Fire Station during the Burning of the Customs House (5 May 1921). During the Truce period, Sean Thorpe claims that he guarded cars parked at the Fish Market belonging to IRA members attending the IRA Convention and took part in the occupation of Fowler Hall, Parnell Square. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), the applicant states that he was promoted to First Lieutenant, H Company. During the fighting in Dublin under the command of ‘Dinny’ Holmes (Denis Holmes) (MSP34REF5694), Sean Thorpe claims that he took part in the occupation of the Tara Hotel and Hughes Hotel, Gardiner Street where he received a gunshot wound on 29 or 30 June 1922 in the right foot and was out of action for up to five months. Following his recovery, the subject states that he took part in a number of IRA operations in Dublin under the command of Sean Campbell including: a raid on Rotunda Rink Post Office (1922); attacks on various National Army outposts including the Irish Independent office, Four Courts Hotel; Broadstone Station; Kings Inn and the burning of JJ Walshe’s shop/home and Blessington Street and [Jennie] Wyse Power’s shop on Henry Street (both Free State Senators). References on file state that Sean Thorpe was part of the firing parties at the funerals of Noel Lemass (MD915) and Captain Harry McEntee (DP5906). Following the Ceasefire Order in May 1923, the subject claims that he was promoted to Company Captain of H Company in June 1923 and remained active with the IRA until 1925. Material on file shows that Sean Thorpe married Teresa Thorpe (sic) née Joyce on 3 September 1924 - see also MSP34REF9312 Theresa Thorpe. Sean Thorpe successfully applied for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Act. Subject was awarded a £40 wound gratuity in 1935 for the gunshot wound he received in the right foot in June 1922.
