Subject Information File relates to John and Bridget Murphy’s unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of their son Thomas Murphy who was shot and killed by British forces at the home of David Tobin, Ballinlickin, Ballylanders, County Limerick on 2 January 1921. Noted in file that Murphy and Tobin were on the run when Tobin’s home was surrounded and both were killed during the exchange with British forces. The Military Service Registration Board awarded service between 1916 and 1921. Also includes an unsuccessful application from Anne Murphy, sister of deceased, for an award. John Murphy made an application for compensation under the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee and was awarded a gratuity of £400 and so was precluded from an award under the Army Pensions Acts. File contains: report from Customs and Excise Officer detailing circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; certified copy of death certificate; report form Social Welfare Officer, Mallow; Military Service Registration Board references from Patrick O'Donnell, David Clancy and D O'Hannigan.
