File relates to Patrick Hogan’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and the Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919.
Patrick Hogan makes reference to an unnamed brother who was an IRA member.
Attached to Ballywilliam Company, 3 Battalion, 1 Tipperary Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: arms-raids on private homes in Shallee and Shannonhall; an attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks (26 June 1920); the arrest and court martial of an IRA deserter and the capture and subsequent trial of a robber.
Patrick Hogan states that he was arrested on 6 October 1920 and imprisoned in Limerick Jail until December 1921. During the Truce period, the applicant states that he took part in the capture of Nenagh Barracks, County Tipperary.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), Patrick Hogan claims that he took part in an fight against National forces in Nenagh (30 June 1922); the Bushfield ambush during which three National Army soldiers were killed and four wounded (August 1922) and the Boher ambush (September 1922).
The applicant states that he was arrested in October 1922 and imprisoned in Nenagh Camp, County Tipperary until an unspecified date.
File includes signed handwritten and typed statements regarding subject's service from Proínsías MacCraith (Frank McGrath) (1935) and Paddy MacDonnell (1935). File further contains a typed summary and sworn statement made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 12 November 1935.
