Subject Information File relates to John McCormack’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. John McCormack states that he was originally attached to C Company, 1 Battalion, Mid Limerick Brigade, Irish Volunteers under the command of Liam Forde from 1917-18. As Company Captain and Company Quartermaster of D Company, 2 Battalion, East Clare Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: an attack on Scariff Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks and ambushes of British forces at Cratloe, Glenwood, O’Brien’s Bridge and Woodcock Hill. Taking the pro-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), John McCormack enlisted with the National Army at Strand Barracks, Limerick on 28 February 1923. Applicant was attached to the 7 Battalion and later B Company, 60 Battalion. He was discharged on 6 March 1924. Material on file shows that John McCormack married Shelia McCormack (née Coghlan) on 9 January 1923. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed from John McCormack in support of his service pension application; original signed handwritten and typed statements regarding subject's service from Major-General M. Brennan (1925); Major Thomas McGrath (1925); Chief Super Harry O’Mara (1925); undated unsigned handwritten notes [of evidence given by John Cassidy before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; and material relating to the settlement and closure of John McCormack’s service pension account following his death on 7 May 1956.
