Subject Information File relates to Patrick J Liston’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension. File also relates to subject's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal which was authorised in November 1946. Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from April 1917 until April 1923. Attached to G Company, 2 Battalion, West Limerick Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: collecting arms, dispatch work, armed guard for the ‘Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit); breaking bridges; felling-trees; mail raids; outpost duty during the Abbeyfeale ambush (September 1920); outpost duty during the Mountmahon ambush (no date) and armed guard duty at the funeral of Patrick ‘Paddy’ Dalton (DP32858). Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 19230), Patrick J Liston took part in general IRA activity during this period and had no actual engagements. Internal Department of Defence correspondence noted that the applicant: “… lives in Athea village, near the Police Station, and apparently his business was to keep aloof from any overt connection with the IRA. It can well be believed that he did this successfully as his activities appear to have been few and far between”. File includes hand-written statements regarding subject's service from Tadhg Crowley TD (1939); Michael Colbert (1946) and D. Uas Ó’Briain TD (1946). File also contains: material relating to Patrick J. Liston’s unsuccessful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts including an application for Special Allowance (1946); a copy of the applicant’s marriage certificate (1914) and representations made on behalf of the subject D. Ó’Briain TD (1946). File also includes a copy of a birth certificate for the applicant’s son (1930) and signed handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding her financial circumstances (1946) – closed.
