File relates to Edward O’Driscoll’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension. File also relates to subject's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal in April 1947.
Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from 22 July 1917 until December 1921.
Edward O’Driscoll claims that he helped shut down a sawmills at Derrymore, O’Callaghan Mills, County Clare from cutting timber for the British war effort during the First World War (17 January 1918); took part in successful operation to rescue IRA prisoners from Ennis Court house, County Clare including Daniel ‘Dan’ Minogue (MD24858), Major Tom McGrath, McNamara and Peter St Ledger (8 February 1918); took part in the disarming of two RIC Constables in Scariff, County Clare (April 1918) during which he hit a policeman called Sharkey from O’Callaghan Mills, County Clare with a “big stick” and helped to capture a boat that belonged to Mrs. Gore but was being used by the RIC at Silvergrove Lake or Lough Bridge beside Derrymore House, County Clare (September 1919).
Attached to B Company (O'Callaghan's Mills), 5 Battalion, East Clare Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity in County Clare during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including : looking after an arms dump on his land which included a rifle belonging to RIC man Stanley who was shot at Feakle (no date); scout work; blocked roads; collecting the Dáil Éireann loan; dispatch-carrying; providing food and shelter for IRA Volunteers on-the-run; arms-raids; guarding the ’Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit) while they slept in empty house on the night before the Glenwood ambush (no date); the destruction of the vacated O’Callaghan Mills RIC Barracks (3 April 1920); outpost duty during attack on Sixmilebridge RIC Barracks (1 June 1920) and provided bombs for attack on Scariff RIC Barracks and performed outpost duty (September 1920)
Edward O’Driscoll played no part in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923).
Material on file shows that Edward O’Driscoll married Mary O’Driscoll (née McNamara) on 5 July 1938.
File includes signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Stephen Minogue (1938); Michael O’Dea (1938); P McGrath (1943); Michael O’Dea (1947) and Michael Moloney (1947).
File also contains material relating to Edward O’Driscoll’s successful application for a Special Allowance including a completed application form; a handwritten report from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1975) (closed) and material relating to the settlement and closure of claimant's service pension following his death on 17 April 1978. Representations were made on behalf of the applicant by Brigid Hogan O’Higgins TD (1975).
