Subject Information File relates to Patrick Lydon’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension. File also relates to subject's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar in April 1950. Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1919 until 1923. Attached to C Company (Kilmaine), 1 Battalion, 3 Brigade (South Mayo), IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity in Mayo during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including; the making of magazines; arms-raids on “country houses”; the care of arms and ammunition; dispatch work; road-blocks; fund-raising work through sports and theatre for IRA men on-the-run; the burning of Kilmaine RIC Barracks (April 1921) and transporting arms for the Tourmakeady ambush (no date). During the Truce period (July 1921 – June 1922), references on file states that Patrick Lydon took part in IRA training camps but the locations are not mentioned. Applicant took the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923). Patrick Lydon states that he was arrested by National Forces on 13 September 1922 and imprisoned until 18 November 1922. Claims that that he was active again with the anti-Treaty IRA until the cease fire in 1923. File contains original signed note from Custume Barracks, Athlone announcing Patrick Keane’s release from jail on 18 November 1922 and that he was liable to re-arrest if “found in arms or assisting in any way the Irregulars”. File includes signed handwritten and typed statements regarding subject's service from Thomas Maguire (1936; 1941; 1954); Patrick Keane (1945); John Murphy (1945); James Bourke (1954) and Michael Shaughnessy (1954). File also contains material relating to Patrick Lydon’s successful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts including: application form; doctor’s notes; medical reports; receipts for taxi journeys to medical examinations (1961; 1965); other correspondence and reports; award certificates and handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1954-66). Representations were made on behalf of the applicant by Mr. Ó Moráin, Minister for Lands (1961; 1965).
