File relates to John Ryan’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension.
Applicant’s separate medal file (MD21320) shows that John Ryan was issued a Service (1917-1921) Medal in December 1952. The medal was later deemed to have been duly awarded and signed in January 1968. File also includes a successful application by subject for Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Act, in respect of ill health experienced by subject (DP43362).
Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from 1918 until 1924.
Attached to B Company, 1 Battalion, 1 Tipperary Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity in County Tipperary during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: arms-raids; the destruction of Ballymackey RIC Barracks; aiding the attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks by doing outpost duty at Ashley Park; involved in the taking of three bicycles from ‘Black and Tans’ (RIC) at Puckane; a raid for arms at “Dann’s”, Congor where RIC District Inspector (DI) Dudgeon lived; an attempted ambush at Nenagh Creamery; armed guard duty over prisoners arrested for a robbery at Corbally; ambush by ‘Black and Tans’ (RIC) at Kilruane during which IRA Volunteer James Devaney (DP2041) was killed and two others taken prisoner; two attempted ambushes at Cloughjordan; in part of a group under the command of James Murray that ambushed Crown Forces who were in charge of a party of civilians removing blockades at Ballygibbon; member of the covering party during the hold-up of the British Military at Nenagh Station when “mules” were shot and the Military were relieved of equipment; in charge of men at Lisboney graveyard who ambushed two RIC Constables in civilian clothes who were later executed at Lower Graigue (May 1921) and a raid for telephones at Kilbarron.
During the Truce period (July 1921 – June 1922), it is stated that the applicant attended IRA training camps in County Tipperary at Puckane, Beechwood, Knockalton and Silvermines.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), John Ryan states that he was involved in cutting and breaking rail and road communications; an attack on an armoured train at Beechwood; the mining of the Railway Bridge, Kilruane and military engagements with the National Army at Curreeny and Kilcommon.
File includes signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Martin Ryan TD (1938) and Con Spain (1940).
