File relates to Michael Lenihan’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension. File also relates to subject's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar in April 1947.
Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and IRA from July 1917 to August 1922.
Michael Lenihan states that he was sworn into the Irish Volunteers by Commandant Michael Brennan (24SP9375). He claims that he helped shut down a sawmills at Derrymore, County Clare from cutting timber for the British war effort during World War I (17 January 1918); took part in successful operation to rescue IRA prisoners from Ennis Court house, County Clare who had been arrested for the sawmills incident (8 February 1918) and took part in the disarming of two RIC Constables in Scariff, County Clare (February 1918).
Attached to B Company (O'Callaghan's Mills), 5 Battalion, East Clare Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity in County Clare during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including : dispatch-carrying; providing food and shelter for IRA Volunteers on-the-run; arms-raids; the destruction of Mills RIC Barracks (3 April 1920); blocking roads for attack on Sixmilebridge RIC Barracks (1 June 1920); an attack on Scariff RIC Barracks (September 1920) and scout work for the ‘Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit) before and after ambushes on Crown Forces in Cradle and Glenwood (January 1921)
File includes signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Stephen Minge (1937); Michael O’Dea (1937); Tomás MacCraith (1937); P. McGrath (1943; 1947); Michael Moloney (1952) and Sergeant Michael Lenihan (1952).
Internal Correspondence from the Advisory Committee (25 May 1937) stated that the applicant had “neither on-the-run nor in a column and in no major engagement in the 6th or 7th period. Very minor activities”.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Michael Lenihan in support of his service pension application and a hand-written letter from the applicant to President Éamon De Valera (23 January 1940).
