File relates to Edward O’Connor’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension. File also relates to subject's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal [without Bar] in 1944. The ‘application for the issue of medals’ was signed and authorised but there is no date for when it was issued.
Applicant claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1915 to April 1923.
In October 1917, applicant claims that he “forcibly removed” District Inspector Foley from the enclosure at a public meeting addressed by Countess Markievicz.
Attached to A Company (Athea), 2 Battalion, West Limerick Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: dispatch-carrying; intelligence work; armed guard for Dan Breen and others when they were staying at Galeview, Athea (1919/20); armed guard for Active Service Unit when they returned from Abbeyfeale ambush (September 1920); prepared for attack on Crown Forces armoured car in Athea which was “prevented by the local curate" (November 1920); removing a “big gun” from Glin Castle (September 1921); was fired on by Black and Tans (‘RIC’) while attending the funeral of Captain [Patrick] Dalton (DP32858); acted as clerk of Sinn Féin court (May 1920 to June 1922); conveyed explosives from Athea to Barnagh for proposed attack on convoy of Black and Tans (‘RIC') and performed armed guard duty at Athea post office (June 1922).
Representation was made on behalf of the applicant by Éamon Kissane TD (1937).
