Subject Information File relates to James Mangan's receipt of a military service pension in resepct of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods covering February/March 1917 to 31 March 1920. James Mangan claims membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from 1917 onwards. During 1917 and 1918 he states that he took part in anti-recruiting (British Military) and election work. He claims that during the War of Independence he took part in arms raids, raids for British Military/Police supplies, 'Belfast Boycott' work and police work. He also states that he took part in: the burning of Cloghans RIC Barracks - date not on file; outpost duty during the IRA attack in Ballina, County Mayo which led to the death of RIC Sergeant Armstrong in July 1920; an exchange of fire with RIC raiding an IRA arms dump at Beckett's Sawmills in Ballina - date not on file; and an attack on two 'Black and Tans' (RIC) in Ballina on 15 April 1921. During the Truce period (12 July 1921 - 27 June 1922) he states that he took part in IRA training camps and served at the Brigade Headquarters in Ballina. Following the outbreak of the Civil War he states that he joined an Active Service Unit and served as a cook during the IRA occupation of Collooney, County Sligo and did first aid duty during the IRA capture of Ballina in September 1922. He states that he was captured by National Army forces a few days after the capture of Ballina following an engagement at Drumsheen. He states that he was subsequently interned until November 1923 at Longford, Athlone, Kilmainham and Newbridge. He also states that he was on hunger strike for 14 days during his internment - dates not on file. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by James Mangan in support of his application; typed summary (1 page) and transcript (6 pages) of sworn statement made by James Mangan before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 on 12 January 1939; signed typed representations on behalf of James Mangan from Thomas Ruane, P. A. Calleary and M. Kilcawley of the North Mayo Brigade IRA Committee and Martin McGrath; handwritten notes dated 14 March 1944 relating to discussion held with unnamed [verifying officers] regarding subject's service and activities; material relating to subject's receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar in 1950 - unclear from file if/when this medal was upgraded to a Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar following claimant's receipt of a service pension; material referring to subject's employment with Mayo Board of Health in the 1950s; and material relating to the settlement and closure of James Mangan's service pension following his death on 5 November 1983 - partly closed for reasons of data protection.
