Subject Information |
File relates to Daniel O’Keeffe's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) which was successful for the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
Daniel O’Keeffe states he was an Irish volunteer and during the 1916 Easter Rising was mobilised. He claims he marched to Galbally, County Limerick on Easter Sunday (23 April 1916), where a countermanding order was received. He says he remained active from this time and was engaged in organising, parades, training and recruiting work. He states he was Quartermaster for Mitchelstown Company, Galtee Battalion. In 1917 he says he seized a rifle from a soldier returning from the Front. In 1918 he mentions attending a public parade after which he had to go on the run. He states he attended elections in Waterford and raids in Mitchelstown.
In 1919, During the War of Independence, he states he was engaged in reorganising the company (now Mitchelstown Company, Glanworth Battalion) under Liam Lynch and was appointed Company Captain. In December 1920 O’Keeffe and references state he joined the 2 Cork Brigade Active Service Unit (ASU) and served with it from its inception until March 1921 when he got ill and was ordered to return to his company. He claims that the ASU along with East Limerick ASU were engaged at the Glenacurrane ambush (17-20 December, 1920). He also mentions he was involved in the Scargannigh/Doneraile ambush in February 1921. Claimant states he was arrested in March 1921 in a round-up and interned in Kilworth and Spike Island until December 1921.
During the Truce period, following his release from prison he states he went in to Mitchelstown Barracks which had been vacated by the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), with a Maintenance party (February 1922). He was later transferred to Kilworth Camp where he became Battalion Adjutant.
During the Civil War O’Keeffe claims he was present at ‘fights’ between the IRA and National Army at Two Mile Borris County Tipperary, and [Coal Fields?], Glenacurrane and Lisnagourneen, County Cork (no dates given). He notes his last fight during this period was at Araglin/Araglen, County Cork in early April 1923. He states he was not captured, and remained on the run, ‘under arms’, until February 1924 when he went into Mitchelstown, after the National Army had departed.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Daniel O’Keeffe in support of her application; handwritten and typed statements regarding claimant’s service activities from William C Regan, Bill Quirke, Thomas Barry dated 27/8 - 17 September 1935; handwritten list of Pre-Truce IRA officers and men of Mitchelstown Company, 2 Cork Brigade, submitted by claimant to Advisory Board; typed transcript of summary of sworn evidence given by claimant before Advisory Committee on 2 October 1935 and material relating to the settlement of claimant's service pension following his death on 23 April 1973, the subsequent awarding of a widow’s pension to his wife, Catherine and the settlement and closure of same on her death on 29 December 1977.
