Subject Information |
File relates to Annie Luddy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan which, following an appeal in 1943, was successful for the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. She also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923.
Annie Luddy and references state that she joined Cumann na mBan in 1917, and was engaged in routine activities from this time. She was living with her mother, sister and two brothers, both of whom were in the Irish Volunteers. During the War of Independence claimant states that her house was used as a call house and she took care of catering for the men staying. Applicant and references state her house was used for manufacture of bombs, cartridge filling, repairing of arms and cleaning of same. It was also a receiving house for dispatches which claimant states she held for recipients or occasionally delivered herself. Liam Lynch stayed frequently, and meetings were held there. Prior to the Glenacurrane ambush [17 December 1920], extra bedding was organised to cater for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) men staying. Afterwards the British military burned hay and corn, for which the family were compensated. She claims she scouted regularly for the South Tipperary 'Flying Column' (Active Service Unit) during this period.
During the Truce period from 12 July 1921 and 27 June 1922, claimant states her house was used as headquarters for the Quartermaster, Patrick Luddy (claimant's brother).
During the Civil War Annie Luddy states her house was again used extensively by IRA men, and she catered for them, and laundered and mended their clothes. She states that for a second ambush in Glenacurrane on 4 August 1923, she had to have meals ready and a change of clothes for 30 men after they crossed a river to get to her house. She also states that when Dinny Shinnick [Daniel Ó Sionnaigh] was killed at this ambush, she brought information to the IRA that his body had been removed by the Free State Forces (National Army). Patrick Luddy states she was also in charge of large sums of money which he as acting Quartermaster had been given to purchase of arms and supplies.
