Subject Information File relates to Kate Hayes's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan which, following a petition in 1952 to have her case re-opened, was successful for the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 during the War of Independence, and Truce period. Her first application and subsequent appeals were refused and she also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923. Kate Hayes and references state that she joined Cumann na mBan in 1917 and was engaged in the routine activities including attending meetings, attending First Aid Classes and raising funds. During the War of Independence (from 21 January 1919 until 11 July 1921) the claimant states that her house was used as a dispatch centre and the claimant delivered the dispatches for the East Limerick Column. The column (Active Service Unit) visited the house regularly for food, and in some cases numbered 30-35 men, in particular, prior to an ambush, such as Dromkeen [3 February 1921], Lackelly [2 May 1921] and Hospital (no date given). Claimant catered for these men on her own and claims this came at considerable financial cost. She washed and mended clothes, kept watch while the men ate and scouted prior to the men leaving. Several Irish Republican Army (IRA) men stayed while wounded or sick, including Christly Fitzgerald, Tim McMahon and Patrick Meehan. Kate Hayes had three brothers in the IRA, who took care of an arms dump on the land, but she had no responsibility for the dump or its contents. During the Truce period the claimant states she visited Castlecong camp every day, bringing food and helping with cleaning. From the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 until the end of this period, the claimant was not very active due to ill-health. Christy Fitzgerald, Pat Quish and Dave Burke all stayed on occasion and the claimant cooked and washed for them. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Kate Hayes in support of her application and additional handwritten and typed material in support of various appeals including a completed petition form to have her case reopened dated 25 May 1950 ; handwritten statements regarding claimant’s service activities from David Guerin, Patrick Quish, Patrick O’Brien and Thomas F Hayes (20 May 1940 - 19 February 1950); typed transcript of sworn evidence given by claimant before Advisory Committee on 29 May 1940, and summary of same; representations on behalf of the claimant from Tadhg Crowley TD dated 28 May 1940; material relating to her unsuccessful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts, (refused as her means exceeded amount allowed) including representations from Oscar Traynor, TD (9 August 1951) and material relating to the settlement and closure of claimant's service pension. Information on date of death and next of kin not included.
