Subject Information File relates to the posthumous award of a military service pension to Alexander Boyd in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. File also relates to unsuccessful applications made by Alexander Boyd under the Army Pensions Acts between 1932 and 1941. Alexander Boyd claims membership of the Irish Volunteers and IRA from March 1917. He states that prior to this he served as a member of Liverpool City Police from 13 April 1914 to 22 December 1915 when he resigned after having refused to join the British Army. He claims that himself and an another [Irish] member of the police name Griffin were courtmartialled for causing mutiny in the [police] ranks. He claims that he returned to Ireland joined Sinn Fein in March 1916 and the Irish Volunteers in March 1917 and that he served as a Company Officer Commanding until taking up intelligence duties in 1919. Subject states that during the War of Independence he took part in: a large number of arms raids; raids for mails; intelligence work regarding the movements and activities of British forces and local Loyalists and members of the Orange Order; the killing of RIC Sergeant Armstrong and wounding of RIC member Barnes in Ballina in August 1920; and exchanges of fire with ‘Black and Tans’ (RIC) on two occasions. He was also involved in the carrying of men and despatches by boat across the River Moy. During the Truce period Boyd took part in IRA training camps and served in the IRA barracks in Ballina as an IRA police officer. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Alexander Boyd claims that between July 1922 and March 1923, as well as taking part in the IRA capture of Ballina in September 1922, he took part in other engagements with the National Army at Castleconnor, Ballina, Glenview and Foxford. He also states that he was involved in the carrying of men, arms and despatches by boat across the River Moy. He further states that he was absent from service for seven weeks from March 1923 due to illness. On regaining his health he resumed his service, remained active until the Cease Fire and remained on the run until December 1923. He states that constant raiding of his family home by National Army forces forced him to emigrate first to Canada and then to the United States of America in 1924. He claims that he returned to Ireland in 1926 but later that year was once again forced to emigrate due to regular police raids on the family home. He finally returned to Ireland in 1932 and joined the Garda Síochána.
