Subject Information File relates to John Ryan’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. John Ryan claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from April 1917 onwards. Attached to C Company (Holycross), 1 Battalion, 2 Tipperary Brigade, it is stated that the applicant took part in arms-raids, trenching roads and mail raids during the War of Independence. He was involved in three separate attacks on the RIC barracks in Holycross, County Tipperary and fired his weapon each time. Subject joined an Active Service Unit (ASU) in his locality in March 1920. In 1921, it is claimed that he took part in an attack on the RIC barracks in Littleton, County Tipperary; fired a shotgun during the “Priesttown ambush” and was involved in an incident when eleven IRA volunteers fought hand-to-hand with British soldiers when they had surrounded a farmer’s house at Fertiana near Holycross, County Tipperary. Applicant was arrested by authorities and was imprisoned from February to May 1921. He joined the National Army on 11 May 1921 at Beggar’s Bush barracks, Dublin and served with the ‘Dublin Guards’, the 2 Tipperary Brigade and then the 36 Infantry Battalion. Internal files state that he “absconded” from the National Army at Templemore barracks, County Tipperary on 9 March 1924 during the Officer’s Mutiny [Army Mutiny 1924]. In a letter to Senator Doyle from John Ryan (dated 25 October 1969), subject also stated that he was a Group Leader with the Local Defence Force from 1940-45 during the Second World War/Emergency period. Material on file shows that John Ryan married his wife Catherine on 17 April 1921. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by John Ryan in support of his service pension application; original signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Sergeant John Mullahey; John Ryan; undated unsigned handwritten notes [of evidence given by John Ryan before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; and material relating to the settlement and closure of John Ryan’s service pension account following his death on 22 May 1976. File also contains material relating to John Ryan’s successful application for a Special Allowance including: completed application form; doctor’s notes; medical reports and handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1963-70) – closed. File includes typed references in support of the subject’s claim from Con Spain (1949) and Jerry Ryan (1949). Representations were made on behalf of the applicant by Tom Dunne TD (1963-66).
