Subject Information File relates to Michael Brennan's receipt of am ilitary service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces between 1 April 1916 and 30 September 1923 during the 1916 Easter Rising, War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Claimant states that as a Limerick Brigade Staff Officer his orders for the Easter Rising were to mobilise East Clare Volunteers and detail men to assist the transportation of arms to be landed by the Aud through Ennis and North Clare up to Galway. Applicant claims to have mobilised 100 men at Bunratty, County Clare before receiving countermanding order. He further claims to have attended a number of Limerick Irish Volunteer Brigade Staff meetings at which he and others including, Seán O Muirthile, Johnny Sweeney and Tom McInerney attempted unsuccessfully to persuade Limerick Irish Volunteer leadership to either fight or give their arms to those wanting to fight. Subject also claims to have unsuccessfully attempted to make his way to Galway when he heard of rising in Galway and to have been arrested but released on a number of occassions by the RIC during the week before finally being arrested by British Military on Saturday 29 April. He was subsequently interned until December of that year. Claimant states he was deported to England in May 1917, imprisoned from July to December the same year and also from February to December 1918. Appointed Officer Commanding the East Clare Brigade in January 1919 serving in that position and as Officer Commanding the Brigade Flying Column (Active Service Unit) to the end of the War of Independence in July 1921 except for two months period recovering from wounding received in November 1920. He joined the National Army in February 1922 and during the subsequent Civil War Michael Brennan served for a time as Officer Commanding 1st Western Division of the National Army, continuing to serve with the Defence Forces as Adjutant General from October 1925 to October 1928, as Inspector General from 1928 to 1931 and as Chief of Staff from October 1931 until January 1940. Reynolds, Colonel Austin Brennan, James Ledden TD, and Major Thomas McGrath; handwritten notes of evidence given by subject before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924; reference to subject's membership of the IRB and Fianna Éireann prior to 1916; reference to burning of Brennan family home by British forces during the War of Independence; material and references relating to claimant's wife, two daughters, son and granddaughter (partly closed).
