File relates to Julia Murphy’s receipt of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1934 under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of her son IRA Private Bartholomew Murphy. File also relates to Julia Murphy’s receipt of a dependents’ allowance under the Army Pensions Acts between 1939 and her death in 1965 in respect of Bartholomew Murphy.
Bartholomew Murphy died during the Civil War on 21 September 1922 at Killarney Military Hospital, County Kerry from the effects of a gunshot wound received by him from National Army forces earlier that day. It is stated on file that Bartholomew Murphy was a prisoner in National Army custody, (in or outside the National Army Barracks at the Railway Hotel, Killarney) when he was shot. According to material on file Bartholomew Murphy served with Na Fianna Éireann and the IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Julia Murphy in support of her applications; signed typed material submitted by T. O’Neill, Solicitor, Castleisland, County Kerry in support of Julia Murphy’s applications; reference to an unsuccessful application by Julia Murphy to the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee in [1924] in respect of the death of Bartholomew Murphy; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Customs and Excise, Army Pensions Board, Social Welfare and Department of Defence investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Murphy family and the degree of dependency of Julia Murphy on her son at the time of his death – partly closed for reasons of data protection; representations on behalf of Julia Murphy from T. McEllistrim TD; material relating to the settlement and closure of Julia Murphy’s dependents’ allowance following her death on 24 August 1965; and signed handwritten statements regarding Bartholomew Murphy’s service and death from J. R. Shanahan and Humphrey Murphy.
