Subject Information File relates to Jeremiah O’Connor’s unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son IRA Private John O’ Connor. John O’Connor’ initial application was rejected in 1935 on the grounds that he had not been dependent on his son. His second application was rejected in 1940 on the grounds of excessive means. See also DP 7242 Henry O’Connor (subject's brother) for details regarding this application. John O’Connor was killed on 23 March 1923 during the Civil War in an engagement with National Army forces at Ballyboggan, County Wexford. According to references on file earlier that day John O’Connor had taken part in an IRA ambush of National Army forces at Kyle, County Wexford. John O’Connor was killed during follow up operations by National Army forces. The Military Service Registration Board certified John O’Connor as having served with the IRA from an unspecified date in 1922 until his death – standard form A. P. 54 dated 23 December 1939 – having previously certified him as having served from an unspecified date in 1919 onwards – see A.P. 54 dated 15 June 1933. References state that John O’Connor had been working in England but returned to Ireland in 1922 and then took part in the Civil War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Jeremiah O’Connor in support of his applications; representations on behalf of Jeremiah O’Connor from Patrick Kehoe TD, Denis Allen, Pádraig Tóibín, Wexford Comhairle Dáil-Cheanntair, Tomás D. Ó Sinnód (Thomas D. Sinnott) and James Ryan TD, Minister for Agriculture; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Customs and Excise, Army Pensions Board and Department of Defence investigations as to the circumstances and means of the O’Connor family and the degree of dependency of Jeremiah O’Connor on John O’Connor at the time of his death; handwritten signed statements regarding John O’Connor’s service and death from Mathew Parle, Philip Lennon, Michael Flusk, James Daly and Robert Lambert; and typed copy statement regarding the service and death of Henry O’Connor and John O’Connor signed by Henry J. Larkin, James Walsh, Pádraig Tóibín and Mícheál Ó Ciardubháin (Michael Kirwan) of the North Wexford [IRA] Brigade Committee.
