Subject Information File relates to Catherine Hogan’s receipt of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1934 under the Army Pensions Act, 1932, in respect of her son IRA Officer Martin Hogan. Martin Hogan’s remains were found with bullet wounds at Grace Park Road, [Whitehall], Dublin on 22 April 1923 during the Civil War. According to the Military Service Registration Board and references on file, Martin Hogan had been arrested on Dorset Street, Dublin by National Army forces the previous evening with another man named Thomas Conroy. According to material on file Martin Hogan had served from 1918 onwards with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in counties Tipperary and Dublin and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Frank Daly states on file that Martin Hogan had also been wounded in his hand on 23 March 1923 during an IRA attack on Carlton Cinema. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Catherine Hogan in support of her application; reference to an unsuccessful application made by James Hogan, Dromineer (sic) Nenagh to the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee in 1923 in respect of his son Martin Hogan; signed handwritten report dated 31 May 1933 from Customs and Excise investigating officer, Nenagh, County Tipperary regarding the circumstances and means of the Hogan family and the degree of dependency of Catherine Hogan on her son at the time of his death; reference to an unnamed brother of Martin Hogan killed while serving with the British Army during the First World War; representations on behalf of Catherine Hogan from Dan Breen TD; and signed handwritten statements regarding Martin Hogan’s service and death from Sean O'Moore (MSP34REF21454), Patrick Kennedy (Nenagh), P. Holohan (MSP34REF380), Michael Fitzpatrick (MSP34REF63535), Frank Daly (MSP34REF20270) and Frank McGrath (Nenagh).
