Subject Information File relates to Michael Walsh’s unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts, 1932 in respect of the death of his brother Patrick Walsh who was killed on 27 September 1922 during the Civil War. Applicant was informed that he was precluded for compensation by the terms of the Army Pensions Act as he was not one of the dependents (brother) covered under the above legislation. It is stated on file that Patrick Walsh joined the North Mayo Brigade, IRA in September 1920 under the command of Joseph McDevitt and Tom Maguire. Taking the anti Treaty side in the Civil War, he was accidently shot dead by an IRA sentry named Kelly at an IRA outpost in Irishtown, Claremorris, County Mayo on 27 September 1922 and buried two days later in Shrule, County Mayo. His brother notes that Kelly left for the United States of America (USA) a few days after the incident. File includes: original signed handwritten material submitted by Michael Walsh in support of his application; and original signed handwritten statements regarding Patrick Walsh’s service and death from Thomas Maguire TD and Patrick F. May; completed application form; doctor’s certificate (1934) and representations made on behalf of the applicant by Bernard Joyce (1933); Richard Walsh TD (1933) and E Moane TD (1933)
