Subject Information Partial file relates to the receipt of awards under the Army Pensions Acts by Patrick Galvin and Catherine/Katharine Galvin and Patrick Galvin in respect of their son IRA Lieutenant John Galvin. File also contains material relating to an application from Denis Galvin brother of John Galvin. The outcome of this application is unclear from the material on file. Note that the family surname is also rendered/referred to as Galavin on file. John Galvin was shot dead by National Army forces on 30 September 1922 during the Civil War. He was a prisoner in National Army custody being transferred from Killorglin to Tralee when he was shot. According to his death certificate his place of death was Ballyseedy, County Kerry. References state that the National Army party transferring John Galvin was under the command of a Colonel M. Hogan. It is also stated that John Galvin had served with the Irish Guards regiment of the British Army prior to serving with the IRA – exact dates and details of this service not on file. According to material on file John Galvin served with the IRA from 1920 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
