Subject Information File relates to John William Murphy and Margaret Murphy’s unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of their brother IRA Private Patrick William Murphy. Neither of the applicants were found to have been dependent on Patrick Murphy. Patrick William Murphy was killed in action against National Army forces at Killorglin, County Kerry on 27 September 1922 during the Civil War. The Military Service Registration Board certified Patrick William Murphy as having served from 1918 onwards with the Irish Volunteers and IRA and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. John William Murphy claimed that Patrick Murphy took part in a number of IRA attacks against British forces in Killorglin in 1920 and 1921 during the War of Independence. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by John William Murphy and Margaret Murphy in support of their applications; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Customs and Excise, Army Pensions Board, Social Welfare and Department of Defence investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Murphy family and the degree of dependency of the applicants on Patrick William Murphy at the time of the latter’s death; medical certificates, reports and examinations in respect of John William Murphy; material relating to the posthumous award of a Service (1917-1921) Medal in respect of Patrick William Murphy to John William Murphy; medical certificate and report in respect of Margaret Murphy; representations on behalf of Margaret Murphy from H.
