Subject Information |
File relates to John Bennett’s receipt of a dependents’ allowance under the Army Pensions Acts between 1940 and his death in 1944 in respect of his son IRA Private Patrick Bennett. File also relates to the rejection of John Bennett’s original application in 1934 when he was found not to qualify for an award under the legislation at that time.
Patrick Bennett was killed in action against National Army forces on 3 December 1922 at Bawndonnell, Slievenamon, County Tipperary during the Civil War. The Military Service Registration Board certified Patrick Bennett as having served with the IRA from 1919 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. John Bennett claims that his son’s remains were “…refused admission into the Catholic Church.”
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by John Bennett in support of his application; undated unidentified newspaper cutting of notice of first anniversary of the death of Patrick Bennett; medical certificates, reports and examinations in respect of John Bennett; representations on behalf of John Bennett from A. Fogarty TD; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Customs and Excise, Army Pensions Board, Social Welfare and Department of Defence investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Bennett family and the degree of dependency of John Bennett on his son at the time of the latter’s death; material relating to the settlement and closure of John Bennett’s dependents’ allowance following his death on 24 January 1944; and signed handwritten statements regarding Patrick Bennett’s service and death from Sean Hayes TD, Nicholas Moroney and H. Bushe.
