Subject Information File relates to Margaret Buckley’s unsuccessful application in respect of her brother IRA Private James Buckley under the Army Pensions Act, 1932. Margaret Buckley was found not to be eligible for an award under the legislation. James Buckley was shot dead during the Civil War by National Army forces at Carrigphooca/Carrigaphooka/Fairyland, Clondrohid, County Cork on 16 September 1922 during the Civil War. James Buckley was a prisoner in National Army custody when he was killed. According to material on file James Buckley served with the IRA from 1919 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Margaret Buckley and Daniel Corkery claim that James Buckley was shot in retaliation for the killing of a number of National Army soldiers in an ambush at Carrigphooca earlier the same day – see related files for details. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Margaret Buckley in support of her application; handwritten signed report from Customs and Excise investigating officer, Macroom, County Cork fated 31 July 1933 regarding the circumstances and means of the Buckley family and the degree of dependency of Margaret Buckley on her brother at the time of his death; and signed handwritten statements regarding James Buckley’s service and death from James Murphy, Charles Browne and Daniel Corkery.
