Subject Information File relates to Nellie Ryan’s receipt of a dependents’ allowance under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her brother IRA Private William Barrett between 1962 and her death in 1982. File also relates to unsuccessful applications from Thomas Barrett, father of William Barrett and Kate Sullivan, sister of William Barrett. Thomas Barrett died before a final decision was reached on his application and Kate Sullivan was deemed to be ineligible for an award under the legislation. William Barrett died from the effects of a gunshot wound accidentally inflicted on him by an IRA comrade at Cordal, County Kerry on 23 September 1922 during the Civil War. According to material on file William Barrett served with the IRA from 1919 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by or on behalf of Thomas Barrett, Kate Sullivan and Nellie Ryan in support of their applications; representations on behalf of Thomas Barrett from David McCarthy and F.
