File relates to Ellen Looney’s receipt of awards under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Section Commander Con Looney.
Con Looney was killed in action against National Army forces on 27 September 1922 at Killorglin, County Kerry during the Civil War. According to material on file Con Looney served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. According to Sean Hyde, Con Looney also took part in the IRA attack and capture of Kenmare earlier in September 1922.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Ellen Looney in support of her applications; Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers & Firemen Contribution Card for 1919 for C. Looney; medical certificates in respect of Ellen Looney; signed handwritten report dated 22 September 1933 from Customs and Excise investigating officer, Kenmare, County Kerry, regarding the circumstances and means of the Looney family and the degree of dependency of Ellen Looney on her son at the time of his death; signed handwritten statements regarding Con Looney’s service and death from Thomas McEllistrim TD, Sean Hyde, John Flynn TD and John J. Rice; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Ellen Looney’s dependents’ allowance following her death on 12 October 1958.
