Subject Information |
Partial file relates to applications under the Army Pensions Acts from Mrs. Richard Barrett and Mary O’Neill in respect of their son and brother IRA Assistant Quartermaster General Richard Barrett.
The outcome of these applications is unclear from the material available on file. However the Army Pensions Board recommended the award of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) to Mrs. Richard Barrett – see standard form A. P. 40A dated 10 February 1934 on file 52APB328. The Board also recommended rejection of Mary O’Neill’s application on the grounds that she was not dependent on her brother at the time of his death – see A. P. 40A dated 10 February 1934 on file 52APB91.
According to material on file, Richard Barrett served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1915 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. It is stated that he served as a Volunteer, Staff Captain, Brigade Quartermaster, Assistant Divisional Quartermaster and Assistant Quartermaster General. It is further stated that he had been captured/arrested by British forces during the War of Independence but had escaped from captivity on Spike Island during the Truce period - exact dates not on file.
Captured and interned during the Civil War, Richard Barrett was executed by the National Army on 8 December 1922 at Mountjoy Jail, Dublin. It is stated on file that he had been sentenced to death by Military Court as a reprisal for the killing by the IRA of Sean Hales TD on 6 December 1922 – see 2D65 Sean Hales.
File includes: original signed handwritten statements regarding Richard Barrett’s service and death from Tom Barry and Tom Hales TD.
