Subject Information File relates to John Kilroy's unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of his brother IRA Company Quartermaster and Active Service Unit Assistant Quartermaster Edward Kilroy. Edward Kilroy was killed in action in Charlestown County Mayo on 22 December 1922 during the Civil War. According to material on file Edward Kilroy was engaged in trying to comandeer cars for the use of his IRA unit when he was killed by a National Army officer whose he car he was trying to seize. It is stated that the unnamed National Army officer was also wounded during the incident. Edward Kilroy had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence and Civil War. John Kilroy was deemed not to have been dependent on Edward Kilroy at the time of the latter's death. File includes: original handwritten material signed and submitted by John Kilroy in support of his application; medical certificates in respect of John Kilroy; signed handwritten report dated 31 October 1933 from Customs and Excise investigating officer regarding the circumstances and means of the Kilroy family and the degree of dependency of John Kilroy on his brother at the time of the latter's death; representations on behalf of John Kilroy from M. Weaver and M. Brennan TD; and signed handwritten and typed statements regarding Edward Kilroy's service and death from Frank Carty TD and M. Brennan TD
