Subject Information File relates to Bridget Stephens' unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of her brother IRA Private John Joseph Stephens. Bridget Stephens was deemed not to have been eligible for an award under the terms of the act as although she was an unmarried sister of the deceased she was not permanently invalided. The body of John Joseph Stephens was found during the Civil War on 3 September 1922 at Red Cow Lane, Inchicore, Dublin with several gunshot wounds. He had been taken by National Army forces from 7 Gardiner Place, Dublin the previous day - 2 September 1922. According to information on file John Joseph Stephens had served with the IRA in County Fermanagh and Dublin from 1920 onwards and during the War of Independence and Civil War. It is also stated that he served as a Battalion Vice Commandant while serving in Fermanagh. File includes: original handwritten and typed material submitted on behalf of Bridget Stephens in support of her application; signed handwritten statements regarding John Joseph Stephens service from Patrick McCann (Fermanagh), Michael Fitzpatrick (MSP34REF63535) and Sean Carty (MSP34REF18703); medical certificates, examinations and reports in respect of Bridget Stephens; signed handwritten statement dated 18 October 1933 regarding the circumstances and means of the Stephens family and the degree of dependency of Bridget Stephens on her brother at the time of his death from Roman Catholic Priest Patrick Freenan; representations on behalf of Bridget Stephens from Pádraig Ó Broin.
