Subject Information |
File relates to Mary Meegan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) in 1935 under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of her son IRA Private James Meegan. The Department of Defence had originally recommended an award of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling). This was reduced following the intervention/recommendation of the Department of Finance.
File also relates to the posthumous award of a Service (1917-1921) Medal in respect of James Meegan to Mary Meegan.
James Meegan's death on 2 September 1922 at the the Workhouse in Dundalk, County Louth from Broncho Pneumonia and Cardiac failure was deemed to have been attributable to his post-Truce IRA service. According to material on file Meegan had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1917 onwards and during the War of Independence and Civil War. References state that Meegan had been arrested and imprisoned in Belfast and Dartmoor prisons during the War of Independence - arrest variously stated to have vtaken place during 1920 and 1921 on file - and was released in early 1922. During the Civil War he served as part of the IRA forces that captured Dundalk from National Army forces in August 1922 and also took part in fighting near Riverstown. It is claimed that exposure endured at this time led to his illness and death.
