Subject Information File relates to Francis Neilan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 31 March 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in March 1917. During the War of Independence applicant states that he took part in attacks on Kilmallock and Ballylanders barracks; present with the Active Service Unit (Flying Column) at Grange ambush, Glenbruhane and Cross of the Tree. Says that he conveyed arms and ammunition out of the residence of Richard Foley. Claimant says that he acted as Intelligence Officer of the 2 Battalion, East Limerick Brigade. Neilan enlisted in the National Forces on 30 September 1922 and was discharged on 10 February 1923 as medically unfit. Noted in letter dated 17 July 1924 that Neilan joined the "Pals Battalion" in Limerick in September 1922 for the purpose of conveying information, etc. , to the Irregulars...and he was ordered to leave the Barracks. Neilan is now an Irregular, and is known to be working at Intelligence". File (1P183) relates to Neilan's application for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of injuries sustained by him while serving with the IRA. Letter from James O'Connor, solicitor for Neilan, states that applicant was captured in Cahirguillamore House, Bruff, County Limerick on 27 December 1920. Claims that he was beaten and taken to Limerick Jail and that he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment. Letter claims that Neilan was sent to Portland Prison and that he went on hunger strike with Robert Barton. Says that after a number of days Neilan was taken ill and brought to hospital where he spent some three weeks. Says that he spent time in Parkhurst Prison and Plymouth [Hospital] before been released and taken to a nursing home in Bournemouth where he spent three months. Claims that he was taken to the Mater Hospital, Dublin where he was operated on in September 1921. Applicant received an allowance from the White Cross Association.
