File relates to Kattie O'Carroll's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods.
Subject claims that she joined Cumann na mBan in 1914; mobilised and awaited orders on Easter Week; attended First Aid lectures, helped collect funds; assisted in bill posting republican literature; election and anti-conscription activities. During the War of Independence O'Carroll claims arms were stored in her house on the night of the Ballylanders Barrack attack. Her house was used as a First Aid station on the night of the attack; was under fire; rendered First Aid to Sean Meade along with other members of Cumann na mBan; ran, under fire, to the assistance of her brother, who was wounded; assisted Ned Tobin in escaping; assisted Sean Stack, who carried £600 Dáil Loan money, in escaping. Applicant states that she stood to for the Ballinahinch ambush, Kildorrery, Lackelly and Glencurrane; carried dispatches twice or more a week; reported movements; was taken hostage on two or three occasions. During the Civil War O'Carroll claims she assisted the Cork Column with dispatches and provided food; reported movements; sent parcels to prisoners. States that she was taken hostage by National Army forces twice.
