Subject Information File relates to Anastasia Torpey's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1934, and a dependents' allowance from 1954 until her death on 16 December 1966, under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private James A. Torpey. File also relates to: Maurice Torpey Senior and Mary Torpey's unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts from 1953 onwards in respect of James A. Torpey; John Torpey's receipt of a dependents' allowance in respect of his brother James A. Torpey; and Maurice Torpey Junior's unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his brother James A. Torpey. James A. Torpey was killed by National Army Forces on 30 September 1922 at Carrick Beg, Carrick on Suir, County Tipperary during the Civil War. He was shot after having destroyed a bridge as part of an IRA operation. According to information on file James A. Torpey had served with Na Fianna Éireann and the IRA from 1919 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Anastasia Torpey, Mary Torpey, John Torpey and Maurice Torpey in support of their respective applications; reference to an unsuccessful application from Maurice Torpey Senior to the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee on 26 June 1923 in respect of his son James Torpey; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Customs and Excise, Social Welfare, Army Pensions Board and Department of Defence investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Torpey family - both at the time of James A. Torpey's death and at the time of the making of the various applications - and the degree of dependency of the various applicants on James Torpey at the time of his death; representations on behalf of Mary Torpey from M. J. Davern TD, John Fahey TD and Don Davern TD, Parliamentary Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries; material relating to the settlement and closure of Anastasia Torpey's dependents' allowance following her death on 16 December 1966; representations on behalf of John Torpey from John Fahey TD and Don Davern TD; medical certificates in respect of Maurice Torpey Junior; material relating to the settlement and closure of John Torpey's dependents' allowance following his death on 29 April 1990; signed handwritten statements regarding James Torpey's service and death from D. J. O'Driscoll, Robert Sheehan and John Norris; and original signed typed and handwritten and copy typed material (25 November - 6 December 1937) relating to query from the Department of Defence to the Office of the Attorney General as to whther Maurice Torpey Senior could qualify as an applicant under the Army Pensions Act, 1937 given that he had reached 60 years of age at the time of the passing of the Act.
