File dates 3 January 1935 - 19 April 1985
Subject Information File relates to Matthew Parle's unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Standard letter dated 22 January 1942 from J. J. Horgan, Department of Defence to Matthew Parle stated that Parle was "...not a person to whom the Act applies". File also relates to claimant's unsuccessful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts - claim rejected due to subject's refusal to co-operate fully with the investigation into his claim. Matthew Parle claimed service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards. Matthew Parle and references state that during the War of Independence he (Parle) took part in raids for arms and mails, did outpost duty in December 1920 during an IRA attack at Foulksmills, took part in the disarming of a number of 'Black and Tans' at [Poulemarle] - date not on file, as well as mobilising for a number of aborted operations. Parle states that during the Truce period he took part in IRA training camps. During the Civil War it is stated that Parle served with a Column or Active Service Unit under Robert Lambert and took part in IRA attacks on National Army forces at Ferrycarrig, Killurin, Whitefort, Kyle and Crory in 1922 and 1923. Captured at Crory in March 1923 he claims that he was subsequently sentenced to death but escaped from imprisonment and went on the run until July 1924. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Matthew Parle in support of his applications; signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Thomas Boggan and Thomas Howlett; typed transcript (6 pages) of sworn statement made by Matthew Parle on 3 March 1937 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten notes relating to discussions held with Messrs Carty and Howlett regarding claimant's service and activities; reference to Matthew Parle's successful application for a Service (1917-1921) Medal - see file MD44636 for more information.
