File relates to Annie Lacy's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) in 1936 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private John Lacy Junior. File also relates to the award of a partial dependents' gratuity of £100 to John Lacy Senior in 1935 in respect of his son John Lacy Junior. However John Lacy Senior refused to accept this award and never accepted or received payment prior to his death on 3 April 1936. File further relates to Sarah Lacy's unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her brother John Lacy Junior.
John Lacy Junior was killed in action against National Army forces on 23 March 1923 during the Civil War. Place of death is given as Ballyboggan, County Wexford on his death certificate. References state that John Lacy Junior was one of an IRA column which had attacked National Army forces at Kyle, County Wexford and which were themselves attacked by National Army forces at Crory, Castlebridge, County Wexford. According to material on file John Lacy Junior had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence and Civil War.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by or on behalf of John Lacy Senior, Annie Lacy and Sarah Lacy in support of their respective applications; original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Customs and Excise, Social Welfar and Army Pensions Board investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Lacy family and the degree of dependency of the various applicants on John Lacy Junior at the time of his death; representations on behalf of John Lacy Senior from John White; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence involving officials of the departments of Finance and Defence regarding the amount of gratuity to be awarded to John Lacy Senior (10 April - 9 December 1935); original signed handwritten letter dated 30 January 1936 from John Lacy to the Department of Defence rejecting the award of a gratuity of £100 to him; representations on behalf of Annie Lacy from James Ryan TD, Minister for Agriculture; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence and related documentation (24 June 1936 - 18 February 1937) involving officials of the departments of Defence and Finance, the Office of the Chief State Solicitor and the Attorney General regarding the question of whether the gratuity awarded to John Lacy can be paid to his widow Annie Lacy and whether any claim from Annie Lacy must be treated as a new application given John Lacy's rejection of the award and his subsequent death; and original signed handwritten statements regarding John Lacy's service and death from S. Ó hAodha (Stephen Hayes), Philip Lennon, H. Donovan and M. Flusk.
