Subject Information File relates to Cornelius Dee's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1919 and with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923. Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1918 and that he took part in the usual activities. During the War of Independence Dee says that he took part in an attack on Ballybunion Barracks in March 1920; capture of Cashen Coastguard Station (September 1920); attack on RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) patrol at Ballybunion (November 1920); joined North Kerry Active Service Unit (flying column) (January 1921); attack on British forces at Ballylongford in which two British forces killed (February 1921); attack on Tarbert Barracks and attack on British forces at Knockanure (April 1921). Applicant says that on 12 May he, Jerry Lyons, Patrick Walsh and Patrick Dalton were surrounded by British forces at Gortglanna and that they were beaten and the party split into three different military vehicles. He claims that they were driven and again beaten before being taken into a field where they were put standing in a line. He states that after Lyons was shot he (Dee) managed to escape and that he received a bullet wound in the thigh. Claims that he was followed and fired upon by British forces and that after some three miles he managed to hide in a drain for about 45 minutes. Says that two men came along and brought him for medical assistance. States that in the Truce period he attended a training camp at Ballyheigue. Says that he was appointed Officer Commanding, 3 Battalion in September 1921 and in January 1922 that he was appointed 8 Battalion Officer Commanding. Claims that he took part in an attack on National Forces at Listowel on 30 June 1922. Further claims he had engagements at Kilcolgan, Bedford and Ballylongford. Mentions that he took part in the capture of Tarbert Barracks in September 1922 and that he was arrested in the same month. States that he was released in January 1924. File (DP90) relates to Dee's application for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of injuries sustained by him while serving with the IRA in May 1921 and also for hunger strike undertaken while imprisoned in Hare Park, Curragh, County Kildare in 1922. Reference to Dee having made an made an application for £2,000 compensation under the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee. States in application form that he received £50 from the British government. Noted that the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee awarded him £150 in October 1924. Application for a wound pension initially rejected. File contains: typed copy statement of applicant sworn before Hill, J.P.
