Subject Information File relates to Mary Nolan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £50 (fifty pounds sterling) in 1937 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private Martin Nolan. Award was reduced from original Department of Defence recommendation of £75 following objection from the Department of Finance. Martin Nolan was killed while involved in the attempted IRA capture of a National Army lorry at Ballyboggan, County Wexford on 23 March 1923 during the Civil War. Although Mary Nolan claims that her son served from 1916 onwards, the Military Service Registration Board certified Martin Nolan's service as begining in July 1922. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by or on behalf of Mary Nolan in support of her application; signed handwritten report dated 30 October 1935 from investigating officer, Customs and Excise, Wexford, County Wexford regarding the circumstances and means of the Nolan family and the degree of dependency of Mary Nolan on her son at the time of the latter's death; and signed handwritten statement regarding subject's service and death from Robert Lambert.
