Subject Information File relates to Austin Neville's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1933 in respect of his son IRA Intelligence Officer Michael Neville. Michael Neville's body was found with a number of bullet wounds on 23 September 1922 in Killester Graveyard. It is stated that he was taken from his place of work at Mooney's [public house], Eden Quay, Dublin on varying dates from 19 to 22 September by armed men. It is alleged that he was killed in reprisal for an attack on National Army forces which had taken place either on the day of or the day before his abduction. It is stated that this attack had led to the death of a soldier named Kennedy. In a report dated 25 September 1923 Colonel D. Neligan, Director of Intelligence, states "It is generally believed that Neville threw the bomb ... when...Kennedy was killed." - See also 2D366 James Kennedy. References also state that Michael Neville had served with the IRA from 1919 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Austin Neville in support of his application; material (25 August - 4 October 1923) relating to an unsuccessful application by Austion Neville to the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee in respect of his son Michael; representations on behalf of Austin Neville from M. Sexton TD, Senator Michael Comyn. signed handwritten report dated 20 May 1933 from Customs and Excise investigating officer, Ennistymon, County Clare regarding the circumstances and means of the Neville family and the degree of dependency of Austin Neville on his son at the time of the latter's death; typed letter/report dated 16 January 1933 from the Adjutant General, Irish Republican Army to the O/C, North Clare Battn. and attaching typed copy letter from Michael Fitzpatrick, 20 Parnell Square, Dublin regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Michael Neville; and signed handwritten statement regarding the service and death of Michael Neville from Michael Fitzpatrick (MSP34REF63535).
