Subject Information |
File relates to Austin Neville's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1933 in respect of his son IRA Intelligence Officer Michael Neville.
Michael Neville's body was found with a number of bullet wounds on 23 September 1922 in Killester Graveyard. It is stated that he was taken from his place of work at Mooney's [public house], Eden Quay, Dublin on varying dates from 19 to 22 September by armed men. It is alleged that he was killed in reprisal for an attack on National Army forces which had taken place either on the day of or the day before his abduction. It is stated that this attack had led to the death of a soldier named Kennedy. In a report dated 25 September 1923 Colonel D. Neligan, Director of Intelligence, states "It is generally believed that Neville threw the bomb ... when...Kennedy was killed." - See also 2D366 James Kennedy. References also state that Michael Neville had served with the IRA from 1919 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
