Subject Information File relates to Bridget Langan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 in 1934 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private Thomas Langan. File also relates to an unsuccessful application in 1956 under the Army Pensions Acts from Madeline Kilawee, sister of Thomas Langan. Thomas Langan was shot dead by National Army forces at Ardnaglass Upper, County Sligo on 20 September 1922 during the Civil War. Thomas Langan was in National Army custody at the time of his killing. According to this and other files Langan was one of up to six (6) IRA members killed in similar circumstances by National Army forces at this time - see also DP654 Patrick Joseph Banks; DP1029 Henry Benson; DP1563 Patrick Carroll; and DP2054 Seamus Devins. It is also stated on other files in the collection that Brian MacNeill (son of Eoin MacNeill) was also killed on this occasion. It is stated that Thomas Langan had been captured following fighting at Rahilly Camp. It is also stated that he had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. According to material on file Bridget Langan's unnamed husband had been killed while serving with the British Army (Army Service Corps according to a reference) during the First World War. She was in receipt of a widow's pension from the British Government. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Bridget Langan in support of her application; material relating to Customs and Excise officer's investigation as to the circumstances and means of the Langan family and the degree of dependency of Bridget Langan on her son at the time of his death; representations (1956) on behalf of Madeline Kilawee from J. Roddy TD; signed handwritten statements regarding Thomas Langan's service and death from James Keaveney, Andrew Conway, John Lynch and Patrick Gilmartin; and signed handwritten letter dated 15 June 1933 from Liam Pilkington CSSR, Hawkstone Hall, Weston, NR. Shrewsbury, England giving his reasons for not supplying the Military Service Registration Board with the information regarding Thomas Langan which they had requested from him.
