Subject Information File relates to John Croke's application for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of injuries sustained by him while serving with the National Forces at Palace East/Adamstown, County Wexford in March 1923. Claims that he received gun shot wounds from a thompson machine gun. Applicant made a further unsuccessful application for an award under subsequent Army Pensions Acts for his service with the Defence Forces during the Emergency. Noted in file that Croke was detailed to accompany Lieutenant Jones to Adamstown. "A complaint had been received from Mrs McCabe (publican), Adamstown, that some armed men had attempted to sieze some money from her. Whilst they were inside McCabe's, the house was surrounded by Irregulars. In the exchange of fire, Private Croke was wounded. Croke was attested to the National Forces on 16 September 1922 and was discharged as medically unfit on 28 August 1924. Rejoined the Defence Forces during the Emergency serving in Second Infantry Battalion, Transport between 14 March 1941 and 8 August 1942. File contains: medical history sheet; Medical report on an ex-soldier claiming disability in respect of service; typed one page statement of John Croke (17 December 1946).
