Subject Information File relates to Kate Murphy's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1934 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private John Murphy. File also relates to the unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts from Kathleen Murphy, sister of John Murphy, between 1953 and1961. John Murphy was executed on 29 December 1922 at Kilkenny Military Barracks during the Civil War. Murphy had been sentenced to death by [National Army] Military Court for being in possession of rifle and revolver ammunition and with taking part in a robbery on Sheastown House when property to the value of £189 (one hundred and eighty nine pound sterling) was stolen. References state that the robbery was an officially sanctioned IRA raid as "...the occupants refused to pay the levy..." - Ted Moore, 30 April 1933. According to information on file John Murphy served with the IRA from [late1919] onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. It is stated that he had also served with the British Army for two years prior to October 1919 and during part of the First World War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Kate Murphy and Kathleen Murphy in support of their applications;signed handwritten statements regarding John Murphy's service from Ted Moore, Martin Bates and Martin Mulhall; handwritten reports and related handwritten and typed documentation regarding Customs and Excise and Social Welfare officers' and Department of Defence officials' investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Murphy family and the degree of dependency of the applicants on John Murphy at the time of his death; representations on behalf of Kathleen Murphy from Senator Patrick Teehan (1954-55), Senator W. Quirke (1954), T. Walsh TD (1955), William Forristal (1955) and M. Medlar TD (1960-61).
