Subject Information File relates to Mary Somers' receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1935 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private William Somers. This award was increased from £50 (fifty pounds sterling) - originally awarded in 1933 - following successful appeal by Mary Somers. William Somers died on 4 September 1922 from the effects of gunshot wounds received by him that same day in an exchange of fire with National Army forces at a fish saloon on Capel Street, Dublin during the Civil War. According to information on file William Somers had served with the IRA from some time in 1920 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Mary Somers in support of her application and appeal; signed handwritten reports dated 24 March 1933 and 28 November 1934 from Thomas Markham, Army Pensions Board, and Customs and Excise investigating officer, D Station, Customs House, Dublin, regarding the circumstances and means of the Somers family and the degree of dependency of Mary Somers on her son at the time of the latter's death; representations on behalf of Mary Somers from [M. Lynch TD] and Seamus S. Ó Daimhin, Ard-Runaidhe, Fianna Fail; and signed handwritten statements regarding William Somer's service and death from George White (MSP34REF4155), Peter Farnan, Patrick White (MSP34REF17815) and Albert Rutherford (MSP34REF22365).
