Subject Information File relates to Ellen Riordan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1934 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA Private John Riordan. John Riordan was killed in action against National Army forces at Coolbrook, Ballingarry, County Tipperary on 11 December 1922 during the Civil War. According to material on file John Riordan served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1918 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. File also refers to IRA service of Timothy and Patrick Riordan, brothers of John. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Ellen Riordan in support of her application; undated unidentified newspaper cuttings showing notice of first anniversary of the death of Jack Reardon (sic) and the ninth anniversary of the death of Sean Riordan; handwritten copy of letter of condolence dated 14 December 1922 addressed to "Mrs. Reardon (sic)" signed by "Martin Breen O/C, Michael O'Dwyer Dept O/C and Denis Ryan Adjt", Head Quarters, 2 Active Service Column, 3rd Tipperary Bde; signed handwritten reports from Customs and Excise investigating officers, Thurles, County Tipperary regarding the circumstances and means of the Riordan family and the degree of dependency of Ellen Riordan on her son at the time of the latter's death; signed handwritten statements regarding John Riordan's service and death from Patrick Ryan, W. F. Quinlan, James Quinlan and Laurence Power.
