Subject Information |
File relates to Brigid Murphy's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112.10.00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) in 1933 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son IRA member Charles Joachim (Rodney) Murphy. File also relates to her receipt of a dependents' allowance between February 1954 and her death in April 1965.
Charles Joachim Murphy (known as Rodney Murphy) was shot dead by National Army forces at New Park Lodge, Stillorgan, County Dublin on 2 September 1922 during the Civil War. According to material on file Murphy served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA from 1917 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. During the War of Independence Charles Murphy had served with Dublin Brigade Active Service Unit. Patrick O'Daly states that Murphy joined the National Army and was serving as an officer until his resignation following the outbreak of the Civil War. O'Daly claims that Murphy fought with the anti-Treaty forces in the O'Connell street area of Dublin in late June/early July 1922. Patrick O'Daly also states that Colonel Thomas Keogh (sic) (2D224 Thomas Kehoe) was in charge of the National Army party which attacked Murphy's billet.
